It can be quite a challenge to be lazy and yet be able to recall every details about the trip.

Sunday went out with my useless friend buddy for Initial D. Not in a mode of reviewing since I am lazy. He is a nice useless bugger as he cant get any of his Uni girls to come along. bah... anyways, the good thing is that we went for an unexpected sales at Times Square (new building in KL near Pudu) and bought some nice pants. I paid my stuff and looked for my friend.

"She is quite cute wei," my friend said, referring to a salesgirl; not sure if she could her it or not but which girl doesnt like compliment. Damn, why I paid so early!!! And now that my friend spot it first I shouldnt double cross him...argh!!

She was kinda sweet and she looks adorable, maybe because of her front tooth and her long hair. I bet she is from Ipoh, I cant find any KL girls that pretty. Well, we 'shopped' longer and tried to bug her. I call her Winnie the Pooh. So WP was near us most of the time and laughed at our silly remarks without hiding, I mean which stranger would simply laugh right in front of you like they know you since you are in kindy. So, my friend make friend with her but as soon as they exchange handshake, her boss called her to deal with some cloths in the shop. Jealous bitch...she is simply jealous...

Well. There goes the part 1 and we went Borders reading books and laugh at the silly boss.

************************************************************************************

To those out there if you didnt realize, it's already August. Yea, it's August already!! Arent you excited? I guess not.

Last year I had the busiest moment trying hard not to forget my friend's birthday and also writing them email and also customize them some ecard. This year, it is even worse since I totally forgot that I am not available grom Aug 3-Aug 16, getting myself brainwash at some weird area ruled by my green alien research sponsor unit. My friend's birthday? Aug 4, Aug 8 Aug 13, Aug 18 Aug 28 Aug... that's all, I believe. Oh no, I promise to send e-flower to my primaryschool friend for her graduation. Nice, a promise to a girl is the most troublesome promise to keep. A lesson that I would never learn.

What should I do?

***********************************************************************************

Part 2 continues with us coming stopping by the shop before leaving Time Square. My friend, already wrote his details on a piece of paper decided to wait for opportunity and approach again. So, he found one while I make a call home. Unfortunately she gave him her mum's handphone [cellphone] number and claimed she didnt use an email...what the heck...the sales is until this Sunday...

Life in Japan 3: matsuri

(I apologize for the late updates but bear with me. I am trying to recall and present to you the best of my memories in Japan. )

After a disappointing showdown of hyakumangoku matsuri, I was very very excited when we were about to go to abare matsuri in Notto, some 2 hours drive away from where we stay. Thanks to my friend who just bump into me and ask me if I wanted to join since there was one more space left; and also those kind SGE members- Sacchan and Takumi.

Prelude to Japanese matsuri (festival). To begin with, hyakumangoku matsuri was actually the biggest festival in Kanazawa. Previous year IJST students manage to catch the glimpse and even join in the dance and parade. It was very disappointing for us that it rained and the outdoor activities were cancelled. Moreover, we had training at Anamizu in the morning and had to forgo the noon parade by default.

Hyakumangoku matsuri literally means festival of 1 million (unit of) rice. koku is a measurement with 1 koku almost equivalent to 5 bushels or 14.58 liters. In a more simple language, 1 koku can feed 1 (lower ranked) samurai for 1 year. This festival commemorates the entry of Lord Maeda Toshiie, Lord of Kanazawa, into the Kanazawa castle in 1583. Yea, imagine how many samurai he can feed with 1,000,000 koku of rice. As a matter of fact, he was one of the most powerful clan in ancient Japan. So, every year during the noon parade, there will be a reenactment of the scene where someone will portray Lord Maeda riding the horse into the city. Of course, you will be brought back to the 14th century where every one put on traditional clothing including the kids! Hyakumangoku matsuri is a local warlord festival, not necessarily related to the religion.

I dont know the origin of abare matsuri but it was very much related to the religion and belief of Japanese people. Evidence of that was that many mikoshi (portable shrines) were brought out and beautifully decorated. Some mikoshi were a few blocks away from the town of celebration and locals would carry them back to the original resting place. Those mikoshi featured were extremely huge, about one storey high (5 metres or 18 feet tall) and was definitely very heavy. Apart from the shrine itself, taiko (Japanese big drum) was also put on the shrine and women and children will climb up the mikoshi, carried by at least 20 men (some women also carry it but men are the majority). On each mikoshi, there will be a young (cute, better than average-looking) girl playing flute, which of course, captured by my manual Minolta camera! Sorry, no pictures. Will consider investing in digicam soon.

Abare masturi literally translated to festival of chaos. There were 7-10 huge poles strapped with straws which I found out its use later. Matsuri almost always starts with hanabi (fireworks) and then the parade. After the fireworks, one those poles were lit with fire and when it almost burnt out, another one will follow soon. Then about 30 mikoshi were ushered in by hundreds of people in jinbe (loose cloth normally worn in summer, apparently a version of yukata). Jinbe was much looser than yukata hence allowed bigger movement. Even girls would wear them, especially those that took part in parade. Since wearing jinbe (loosely) would expose the chest, girls would strap themselves with white linen, like those you watch in samurai movies, or the modern version of it- a white top.

So, there you go with hundreds of people moving their local shrines and circling the pole with yet another few hundreds watching from the side. It was really packed and sometimes, burning ashes from the pole would drop like falling leaves in the fall. Flutes and drums were played and people shouting and cheering, the event was simply amazing. Imagine 30 shrines were congested on the street, having to make a circle at every pole of fire. They have to stop, make rest, align themselves…it was not easy at all to maneuver that huge mikoshi in circle, commanding some 20+ people moving in coherent. Sometimes it looks as if the shrine will lose balance heading to the flaming pole, and yet they manage to control it. The first thing that comes to me was ‘what about the kid on top of the mikoshi?’ Well, they have done it for centuries and maybe will be for another century.

One interesting thing about this festival was that people would drink sake even during the parade. So, you literally have half-drunk people, youngsters included. I can imagine them getting really high from the work, excitement, and sake! It seems that the only orderly element comes from the crowd watcher, but even that, people were excited and getting restless. Abare matsuri truly lives up to its name- I experience the most chaotic moment of my life, and I love it!

PS: currently blogging from Malaysia. Hopefully with the time, and nice food, I will have better inspiration.

Life in Japan 2: My student's life

Life in KIT was rather overwhelming. Every week there will be something going on if you stay tuned to the local gossips around. I was rather consistent for the first two weeks and missed only a few smaller events. It wasn’t like there is an announcement board on what is coming up for that week, you just have to be conscious about it.

For the first two weeks, there were 2 parties going on. There were more after that but I don’t want to go and sometimes I didn’t know about it. Japanese party was crazy but peaceful. They drink a lot, got drunk quickly, yet by midnight they were sober enough to go home. There were only a few cases where people puked or passed out. I feel good because Japanese turns red pretty quickly, just like many Asians and I am not alone! However, they are not ashamed to admit that they are drunk, and they did lots of funny stuff. Almost every time, we have bottles of huge sake and finished them by the night. Each bottle is supposed to last 1 person (I think) for a month but we finished 2 bottles at least. On top of that, there were rum, vodkha, beers and other punch. One thing nice about the party is that it is cheap. We forked in \700 (about $7) each for one party. People were kind and they watch each other’s back. It is something that one should not miss.

Since it is a summer program, life is not all about party. We have classes as well. Our classes start at 955am, a real luxury compared to my life in UIUC where the earliest would almost always 900am. Although our classrooms are air-conditioned, I still feel rather warm, and sometimes the AC wasn’t cooling too well. One interesting to mention about the class room is that we can have access to the internet. However, they do not have wireless but to rely on an infrared connection. There are various IR source from the ceiling, and there is a machine that will locate and connect to it. All we have to do is basically plug our LAN cable to the desk, and let the machine do its job. Nonetheless, this robot looking machine will take a long while, shivering like it is going to break down and making a machine gun looking noise before successfully connecting the IR source. The success rate is table dependent. Some table may take forever to launch a successful connection.

Since there is a class, there will be assignment. I mostly stay in the lounge to study together and to use the internet (there is not connection in our room). The Japanese student will be there too most of the time. If we have problems, we could ask them. Meanwhile, they too would bring their homework. One of them is studying Korean while the other one studies Chinese. Of course, we would help them if possible. There were also talking and crapping in both Japanese and English, if possible. There is this guy trying to learn English and in the end, what he picked up most were expressions like ‘Hell, yeah!’, ‘Oh my god’, ‘Give me a hug’…we too picked up some funny Japanese expressions, one which I will never forget ‘chibiri sou’, which means I want to pee. Most of the social mingling takes place here.

Meal plan over here was pretty much eating out. After coming back from Kyoto-Osaka trip, I have decided to cook more, hence less mingling with fellow ‘comrades’. There is a cheap ramen store called bikkuri, as low as \189 for a nice ramen, a place that I frequent most. The boss is nice and the waitress is friendly. Once, the boss treated us with chocolates! There is also a bakery, sankyo, which we pack most of our lunch. They have cheap bakeries, and me and my friend would get our favorite ‘diabetic’ there for almost every lunch. ‘Diabetic’ is basically a bakery coated with lost of sugar, something that is common even in Malaysia but nowhere to be found in the States.

Then, there is this 100yen supermarket that I went frequently to get my stock of ramen and soumen, eggs, cucumber, soysauce, drinks, etc. Things there are indeed cheap, and I save a lot from there. I even got my bread and jam there and some snacks. In short, it is like having Meijer in Champaign- convenient and cheap.

As for the money, we change our traveler’s checks in the nearby post office. They seems to cater for our needs because they even have our dorm address prepared. Many years of IJST students must have changed their checks over here for the last 10 years maybe. It is fun exchanging traveler’s check once in a while because the rate fluctuates. It is like speculating currency but in a much lower level. I had at once a very low rate ($1 to \106) but recently it jumps up to very high ($1 to \110), higher than what I was offered in Champaign. I am now still speculating as I need to change more for the after program trip in Tokyo, hopefully they will rise up to $1 to \115.

Of course, one experience that I will not forget is having been to a local festival.

More to come!

PS: My condolence to the immediate families of London subway explosion. It is an attempt by terrorist, and many people had blog about it. Look it up!

Life in Japan 1: Intro to Summer Study Abroad Program

With full consciousness, I realized that it’s been a month since I wrote something about my blog. At least something would happen in my life that is worthy of mentioning and share with what little audience that had been faithfully lending their ears. To everyone out there, I am in Kanazawa, Japan, doing a summer study abroad program with Kanazawa Institute of Technology (KIT), in case you forgot, you didn’t realize, and if I didn’t tell you earlier. Life is almost too wonderful over here, and yes, I have been really bad for not sharing with you all. So, here I am trying to do it the shortcut way by highlighting my life in Japan. Thank goodness my sensei make us wrote journal, which is something that I would cherish at this moment.

Let’s start my blog with the appetizer- IJST (Intensive Japanese Science and Technology) Orientation.

It was amazing that 3 years in US makes me forgot most of the ritual which is so Asian, until our cultural sensei mentioned it. It begins with formal speech by the dean of KIT, and ends with a welcoming party. I met many Japanese in that party and tried very hard to understand the conversation. To be frank, KIT students’ command of English is poor, conversation wise at least. Although I dare not say that’s the case on behalf of all Japan, I believe it is safe to assume that. They would look up in their electronic dictionary the words we are trying to express, and from chunks of words, we begin to understand each other a little better. Hence, from the very beginning, our Japanese skill was being tested. And the myth that almost everyone carries an electronic dictionary in Japan is true.

As part of our orientation training, we have to go through zazenin daijoji temple, meditation. The chief monk in the temple insisted that zazen is not meditation, since meditation focus on concentration while zazen focus on letting go of our mind. Nonetheless, the term meditation alone saves the time to explain the differences. We did a total of 15mins of zazen and during that time, I had a trouble moment of controlling my mind. It was not easy at all letting go of your mind and remained calm, especially right in front of me there is a not too bad looking female lady also doing zazen...hmm...

After that, we went for a one night training camp at Anamizu, which includes a BBQ, a communal bath, some free time to get sweat and illegal after curfew game, morning lecture and bay cruise! The BBQ was one of the best, with lots of beef and seafood. Everyone was full yet there were some left over! It was an awesome feast, and interacting with the Japanese was fun too. They refer to the senior students as senpai instead of just their name. It reminds me of my Hong Kong roommate where they sometimes refer to their seniors as see heng or juniors as see dai.

After that BBQ, we went to sweat ourselves at gym, before going for the communal bath. The communal bath was definitely interesting as everyone went naked into the bathing room; of course the boys and girls are separated. (Nonetheless, I heard some places offer mixed open door communal bath somewhere in Japan...) There was a place for shower and a big bath tub (ofuro), enough to fit 8-10 people in after cleaning by the side. The water was very hot, it hurts after the initial touch but as I soak longer, it became comfortable. For the boys, they brought in a small towel to wipe themselves and to cover the lower part. As for the girls, we peeped through a hole from our room and saw that they too brought a small towel to wipe and their upper part (which includes the breast) uncovered. OK, I lied. My friend told me about it; there wasn’t any hole to peep through, else it would have been a huge privacy and moral issue. ,

The illegal after curfew night was fun. We went roaming at random rooms and joined in whatever activities that we think it was fun. In one room, there was Indian Poker and loser had to drink Korean sake. Korean sake tasted bad but the smell was rather strong. However, the small bottle was not good enough to get anyone heavily drunk. Yea, I drink for the first time in Japan.

The following day’s lecture and cruising were not extraordinary fun. Overall, I think the purpose of the program was not to train us, but an attempt to connect us as a group. It also served as a window to meet with Japanese students, all from SGE (Student Global Exchange) in this case. Maybe the coordinator has intended something else, but this was what I have gained during the supposedly training period.

More to come!

(Hmm...did I say the same thing for my trip to UK?)

My Summer Meal Plan

Since it is summer, I am booted off my dorm and gotta bunk like a refugee in the desert with Isrealite patroling team. Not quite refugee camp but rather bunking with my friend and taking over the role of his roommate...muahaha. Hmm...you seems to be confused, let me give you an anology- my friend's roommie went home, so I can stay over at his place. Is that understood?

Anyways, the point is that I have no meal plan like I am sploit in the dorm. That includes unlimited Hagan Daz ice cream and once in a while cheese cake with strawberries. So now I have rely on my wallet plan. The most economic way is to go litch at friend's place like I did twice. But one cannot do that often else his reputation will go down the drain. What I could do next is to buy Antonio's pizza!

Yes, this is a free advertisement for Antonio's pizza along Green Street. The pizza is cheap but nice to eat. It comes with various creative flavors such as quesadillas, and other weird taste. You could also put your own toppings. It is cheap enough for me to eat for 3 days. Oh yea. Then I have my free KFC during the Midwest games as...ya, as official. Illinois student who are helping out are given free KFC if you know the person in charge.

Now, I just finished the packet of buffet tapaoed from Midwest. Oh yea, microwave and fridge are your good friend. They are like mistress and wife- hot and spicy after the few minutes preparation; fridge is always reliable it doesnt matter how long you dump the food in it.

Midwest Games

After months of preparations, the Midwest Games (Midwest) finally comes to a closing note. For those who are not undergraduates in the United States, Midwest is like a mini Malaysian Olympic where hundreds of students coming from all over the states to come and compete. This year, UIUC is honored to host this annual event and it looks like we pulled off pretty well.

UIUC Team:

Commitee was formed and people signing up for the intested sections...blah blah blah, you know the procedure. But what you may not know is the man power crisis we are facing. 2 previous hosts had a selection of 200+ Malaysians to help out and we only have 80, including graduating seniors. Hence, we may not connect all the dots well in the end of the day but we deserve the credits for doing a good job. Comments? Yes. The bid to host Midwest was rather controversial. Not every Malaysians in UIUC is keen about it. Volunteers comes only at the last moments. I dont blame them since only a fraction of people who are really interested in running the show anyways. I appreciate the volunteers who come and help out on the day itself. Sad but true, majority chinese communities here are not doing much in the planning of the game. I think we should be more active politically sometimes, instead of complaining that the commitee was not doing enough.

Registration:

The registration was great. Everyone reported in and pay their dues and buy additional buffet tickets...blah blah blah. All but those who are late and will be entertained by us tomorrow at the late registration counter. Comments? Sure. I love the Ohio State Universities registration team- they sent only 3 representatives to handle all the payment. That is neat. Instead of some crowds who barged the counter like refugess leaving the campsite. Specifically mentioned a person from West Michigan Kalamazoo...I think. He thinks he deserved the best treatment and was rather insisting that he and his basketball team be cleared of the problems first. I could sense a feel of dissatisfaction from his school mates. Man...

VIPS:

If you read my blogs in tblog, you would realize that I am not too fond of VIPS. Especially those who create so much troubles. This is a Midwest Games and there are 900+ students. Shouldnt this be student orientated? Of course we will never leave the VIPs alone and let them starve and sleep by the road side. So please, we do realize the ever irritating protocols to follow. Nonetheless, since most fund comes from the MSD, we have to appeal to their requests...and obviously includes pleasing the VIPs. So fine, we have students meeting with them, student leaders meeting, VIP speech...but please, leave the planning with us. Comment 1: We as the host here would realize better what that we can do and what that we cant do. Hence, some of their request...sorry but can only be denied. I dont like those officers who place specific request and proceed without informing those who are in charge. Please, there is a procedure to follow, regardless of your rank. And the student leaders dinner list? I cannot understand their reasoning by inviting only some. Some schools were denied while some were invited 2 representatives. Funny...In short, I hate the fact that more than half of the planning was focus on the welfare of VIPs.

UIUC Performances:

UIUC has the greatest performances, with glitches in the ending. Damn. Due to miscommunication, the surprise ending was delayed for too long to create the awesome expected effect. Apart from that, we were praised by fellow students and audience for putting up a good show. The musical drama was original, creative and also superb. That's what I am proud of, and the best compliment we can get for attempting to steer away from the traditional dances. It's so much easier to perform the traditional Malay dance but I believe we were great. Special credits goes to paydot, the team leader for holding up all the performers with unbelievable patient. I handled something like that once but lost my temper and failed to hold the performers together as a team. Also the girls, because not only they have to tolerate the guys laziness (I think at one point, they were fed up with the guys), they also have to do our costumes and simply the fact that the play had more female appearance- which means more practises and dance sequences to remember. Thanks for you all, at least I am truly grateful for given a chance to perform and working with every performers.

One special person:

Midwest in UIUC would not meant any more if the name Dezerk is not mentioned. Diagnosed bone cancer, he went through 4 chemos and walking in crouches. Yet, he did more that what those fitting Malaysians did. No one realize it because he was involved in the stage planning and coordinating. He did not sit himself with the VIPS, which he easily could given his conditions, but chose instead to sit at the back of the stage and help out. Plus, his ever understanding character. Everyone involved in the stage set up and performers set up looks like a time bomb waiting to explode. But he was magically appears calm and that look of 'dont worry, everything would go well' did add some time to the time bomb countdown. He still has 2 more rounds of chemo before more diagnosis could be done, but stay strong, I want you back as my roommate!

So, here they are, the highlights of Midwest that is of my interest. May that too shed some lights to things that was not seen from the surface, but only by those who runs around.

Gilmore Girls

Someone just challenged me that I could never blog in tow of their presense. That i should just give up and join them watching Fillmore Firls. Yea...i meant Gilmore Girls. So here I am watching Gilmore and my daughter realized that there is interesting shot going on in the movie. There is this moment where she was sitting and kept talking to the bar tender. What my daughter realized was that the collar of her shirt moved. Sometimes it was neat but sometimes it was flipped in. Cool, you never move but the collar seems to have a live of its own. Great. It wasnt funny but the fact that someone pointed it out makes it funny. I wonder if my daughter is watching the movie or not, but that was an interesting observation. It is just a small mistake from the production team but it is interesting that sometimes we were caught by the flow of the movie and these little things slip our eyes. Wanna check it out? My friend said it is 4th season and ... why not you go find out yourself and tell me.

I am now watching Angelina making out with her brother...kissing her brother, i meant

Response to events in Malaysia 2

This time, after reading stuff in jeffooi's website, I'll sumarize some of the main events and offer my what left over thoughts of them. What I think stood out most are- The prosecution of NS dodger; Anwar's interview with HARDtalk and UPM VC fiesta. While Jeff merely highlighted the issues, I strongly advice that the comments should be read, which some provides provoking thoughts.

1. The prosecution.

I do sympathize with the kid but I will not blame the AG. It is a sad scenario that he, such a family orientated boy would be sent to jail for such offense. It is a consequence of people not aware of their rights. It is also an implication of the failing authority to ensure that the rights of citizens being protected. Firstly, as questioned by some of the commentator, did the police pressing charges against him try to encourage him to tell the truth? Or they were merely carrying their job and just jot down whatever statement he provided. I wonder too if the boy was placed under an intimidating situation where he had to answer only ‘yes-no’. My gut feeling tells me that someone on the top would want a scapegoat and his profile fits one. Afterall, they can plead for linier sentences and everything would be perfect. So, for the wrong of not attending NS because he is lazy (as recorded in statement), the justice is doing a pretty well job. Everyone is equal in the eyes of the law. What I don’t agree in this saga was how the police handled the case and also the DPM’s ever-dodging statement. Why is there no comment on the situation of the boy? Or will there be reviews of NS in the future to ensure such sad episode would not repeat itself? What about the issues of various misconducts during NS? Personally, I don’t think NS is a good program since the purpose of NS is not properly defined. It was vaguely determined after misunderstanding arises. Besides, the Malaysian instant method makes it looks good on the cover but not the application. I really they should scrap this program and let the money be used at a better places. What about increasing salaries to train teachers like SPM top scorers. Never see teacher as an option.

2. Anwar's Interview

This is my first time seeing him on interview. I would say he scores pretty well on my board. I am impressed that he was not afraid of Sackur’s grilling and took it quite confidently. Meanwhile I believe Sackur was not familiar of Malaysian politics and the very American way of asking ‘the people want to know…’ was rather dramatic. It was not appealing to me but who knows some Astro viewers may like it. However, while being consistent in his statement, some issues remain unclear to me. How much he actually changed during imprisonment? If he is really seeking for the good of the rakyat, why he would not assume the post of ADIL president? If someone’s claim, that he wanted to rejoin UMNO, was true, must he reform the country in the name of UMNO? Despite the fact that the collision oppositions have the common reforming agenda, they don’t seem to resonant well with a common solution. Will he really abolish ISA as claimed? I want the ISA to remain but as peace enforcer but not a political tool. I do not endorse the money politics but being an undergraduate, I cant say how much oil I will dip into during my career. Nonetheless, I agree that PM Abdullah is not effective in rooting out the weeds and a stronger leader is needed to carry out the job. Anwar has the courage and strength but his credibility remain in question.

3. UPM VC Fiesta

That is simply disguting. The fact that we have 2 minister babysitting the education system is a joke itself. Now, it looks like (from the floor of commentator) UPM VC was scoring high in the popular poll. I definitely question the intelligence of the previous VC in removing Pertanian in UPM. Well, it doesnt matter maybe. But the removal of Pertanian symbolizes the importance of agricultural was put second. What I couldnt understand is that why is he now want to revitalize the agricultural section in North Malaysia!! If this was brought up by another person, I wouldnt be as angry. It gives me an impression that he is a suck-up of whoever that brought up the issue that Malaysia should also focus on the agricultural section (not sure if it is Selangor MB or PM Abdullah). But again, I do not know enough what is going on. It is only fair that I do not talk too much of this issue. I will not comment if the VC should be fairly removed or not.

Bluek

Right after finishing my last exam in the morning, I went home and do all what a student suppose to do...announce to the world that I am done and irritated people with that fact.

Nonetheless, this Indian matcha asked me to go to his place for Beer Pong. So, why not? Since another group havent decided where to go, yet. I was still comtemplating if I should go since I havent eat anything...except for a cup of slushy? What the heck, I could eat after that.

Beer Pong was quite fun...except the beer was horrible. Firstly, it is not chilled too well, hence I felt like drinking pee instead. And its taste just sucks. And never underestimate those beers split into cups. It could still add up to a decent amount. But those desis are rather cute...so I am fine staying there although I am the only Chinese dude. I had another beer pong and start doing random shit like calling other people...and shouting "UIC sucks..." at strangers on the phone and pretend to be drunk.

Until an hour later, the desis started to leave. What else, perfect timing to go away and get something to eat. On the way home, meet another friend, talk crap...go swipe for food, watch poker and the rush came. I wanted to surpress that feeling at first, because I dont want to puke before eating. However, sometimes, you dont have a choice...when it comes, it comes. Like

Without even thinking, I rushed to the bathroom and get to a bowl...and bluek bluek bluek...and ahh...that feels so good. But my head is still spinning. Went home, chat with friends, waiting for another round of call...but suddenly, I bluek again. Shit, I thought those craps are done already. Reaching for the trashcan I bluek everything out, making sure that there is no more third time.

I dont remember a single thing after that as my head hurts and I really need the warm and cosy bed. Woke up at 730 and check for stupid things that I may have done- left a AIM conversation hanging, ignored a call from group 2, I didnt clean up my bluek leftover in the trash can, and my overnight pizza that I swiped!! I couldnt stand even for a moment of softcore beer ponging seesion!

I really never expect the effect of eating and not eating would be exponentially so different!

Running Away

First taste of Hell will begin in less than 12 hours, excluding my eating and toileting moment and sleep. At least I am not left alone watching movie...

Currently I am infatuated with Moulin Rouge, had been listened to my ever favorite: - El Tango De Roxanne, Come What May (Finale), Nature's Boy, The Show Must Go On, and Elephant Love Medley for hours...an attempt to drugged myself into the ethereal world of Moulin Rouge...

I will wake up...after posting this lyrics. You know what, this is something I will never do in my blog and I intend to keep it that way. Look it up for yourself.

Better and Safer, Our Technology

We are talking about Technology. Yes, I mean all those latest features in msn or Windows or Internet browser that are supposed to make your life easier...and safer.

I never have a habit of installing passwords unless required. If it is an optional option, I would just let if be blank. Until I was hit by an unknown virus that shut my PC off the dorm, I was forced to set a password on my Windows XP. To allow the hacker one more layer of trouble before he can get into my system...Guess what? I FORGOT IT!!! Since it is the highest adminsitration password, what else can I do but to lose everything and reformat my PC... safer my ass, I am kept away from my own PC set by my very own password! The hint wasnt any helpful since all that I can remember now are the default password that I use for all my account. Jeez, I thought I used the same password too! Argh!!

Case 2: Firefox is so kind. It not only blocks all pop-ups but also offer to remember all passwords you use for all transaction. I access my email using my roommate's PC (which includes typing this entry)...only to press 'Yes' when offered to remember the password. Damn it. If not because I am a little bit smarter to look up for options to delete it, anyone could access my email and reset my password and hack into me! bastards...

Safe my ass!!

Real College Life

Oh yeah...all the troubles mentioned in the previous post are over! Hurray my ass, because new problems greeted me in the morning. What the hell...but I should be fine, i guess. (Booking a room since my adviser wanna have his a last word of wisdom imparted before he leave the office...meeting up with the IPENG people for my summer stuff...send in the should-have-done-that-earlier claim forms...meet up with cute but no longer available TA for some highly unlikely leak questions...study for more exams...look for my runaway school ID...laundry...)

Since I am moving out of dorms in like...a week, I wonder if I should do my laundry now or should I wait till the last few days? I should, be studying and camping anywhere but in front of a PC. So, there is no reason good enough for me to do my laundry...except of course if I am left with one or no underwear.

So, here I am counting how many underwear left in my drawer...including the bright red superman underwear that I would never wear. I never throw them away because I am keeping them for days like this. Dont ask me why I bought it. You know, those cheap skate underwear that comes in a package of 5 and you have to buy them in set...Oh well, I checked my drawer, it should be enough to last me for 2 more days...what the hell? And I am running out of socks too!!! Should I adhere to my friend's advice of recycling an underwear? Or should I go commando? I dont wanna let my brother guillotined by the zippers though...

College kids never do laundry until they ran out of underwear, that's so true. I mean, what's the point? You gotta pay per washing machine used, plus they use drier here, which means another round of small fees to pay on top of the washing machine. It's a waste of time and money and detergent.

So, let me enlighten you the ways of wearing your underwear 4 times or more before dumping it into washing machine. I wont do it unless it is extremely necessary- like out camping or bag packing where you dont even bath.

1. Wear it the usual way.
2. Flip it Front and back
3. Flip it Inside out
4. Turn it Front and back

In whatever you do, make sure there is no stain of leftover brownies or your... icing due to *planewhacking. Any of the stain will doom the everpowerful underwear to the hell and needed to be purified by the powerful spell of detergent.

There you go, saving your laundry fees up to 400%! An amount unrivalled by any detergent advertised in the market! Of course, the ever dangerous comandoes that may exposed your oozie butt crack.

*planewhacking- chinese term of masturbating

Champaign is Cloudy

Life before semester is over sucks big time. The bloody 2 weeks before finals that you have to go through is hell. US system of finals week is damn stupid. Next week the last day of instruction will end on Wednesday and Thursday is the Study Day and some finals start on Friday. But heck, there are still homework due on Monday? And I just had my 3rd hour exam on Friday, yesterday.

I would prefer if they give us a week or more to read through the stuff before the final exams. I guess this system never favor those inconsistent people like me. Yes, I am not consistent, so what? Who with a sane mind would be happy and getting high everyday for the rest of their life? If they do, I can only have 1 conclusion, they are in heaven already.

So, enough ranting. I am suppose to do my paper on Tango and come up with some plan on Tango presentation. That is due on Monday. Then I have 1 homework due on Monday, which is somewhat important because it counted somewhat to the final grade. Oh, there is also kanji quiz on Monday. There is another homework due somewhere next week. Argh!! Not to mention tonight I have to be the MC for Malaysian student association dinner.

Nonetheless, having complain so much, I think I would be glad all these happen. Tonight MC will be a great experience for I always wanted to try at least once. I screwed up once and I intend to be better this time. And I gotta meet friends who I rarely have a chance to meet up with them. Also a Japanese girl who I stalked for a semester, yes, she would be there. Trying hard to take a picture with her and tonight will be the night. Yeah, she created a havoc in my life last semester...what the hell...check mechanism of bad luck and also Dead Fish and Something Fishy on the same page.

Even the tango lesson from Brittney and her boyfriend was awesome. She went all the way out and ask her boyfriend to kinda give me an elementary lesson on Tango. With only2 basic steps, you can dance all over the floor. Forget about the sexy leg thingy which is a little too advance to me. But that was more than I expected. If I got an A in that class, they would be among the top list that I would mention in my Oscar thank you bull shit speech.

Oh boy I almost forgot there is another group presentation on my Kanazawa thingy...argh!!

Busy Busy Busy Busy...Cant wait for the semester to get over with.

Sino-Japanese Relationship 2

As a Chinese, I was told of various stories where my maternal family members have to hide during the invasion. They were afraid of the Japanese. Their hatred towards them is felt even until now. Quote "It is a curse that Princess Masako would not deliver a male for what they have done in the past [referring to World War II]" This is in Malaysia. How much more worse could it be for those in China?

Hence, I could relate the hatred of the Chinese towards Japanese, especially those that went through the time of darkness. Nonetheless, what I cant undetstand is that similar despise is generated by those from younger generation. Why such intensity? I understand that one should keep Japanese government accountable for what they have done in the past, as well as what they are doing now. However, their extreme hatred toward Japanese seems to go a little overboard.

I think Rape of Nanjing is being exaggerated. 30 million people is too great a number to be true. I would accept 3 million, even that is quite hard a fact to accept. Records widely point to 200,000 ~ 300,000. I suspect that 30 million is a more convenient way to flame hatred. Simply by looking at the number, one would already be stunned and could only blame the Japanese, forgoing the reasoning. Like bards telling their adventure, massacre in Nanjing serves as the reminder of the atrocities done by Japanese Army, in a dramatic manner. Although I read of accounts of victims being used as target practise, experiment guinea pig and hunting sports, I wonder if some of the account too was exaggerated. I do not shrug away at the possibilities of their inhumane act but I cant help thinking the possible agenda behind such exaggeration. Is it to rally for nationalism? or attempt to unite all Chinese all over the world?

The younger Japanese do not have a clear picture of what is going on. While we want to keep the government in check, we have to realise too not all of them know the full pictures of their parent's crime. It is not a mainstream idea for Japanese admit it. Therefore, we cannot blame them entirely for not knowing the level of brutality. Ironically, they look upon themselves as victims of WW II. It is important that we keep a cool head and not to be too carried away by our emotion. Better all those protest be peaceful or it will leave Japanese a bad impression, worsen the already delicate matter. Yes, we should keep the government in check and I think the protest against the revise of history textbook is appropriate. Meanwhile, we should also attempt to expose our Japanese friend to the alternative view of their history, instead of just boycotting them and not interacting at all. Creating awareness among them would be a better idea, dont you think so?

Chinese can easily associate ourselves with any Chinese anywhere in the world. If you go to a Chinese stall in US, and you could speak Mandarin (in a Mandarin-speaking area) and could bargain well, expect some discount. Or at least a more pleasant service. (This somehow doesnt seem to apply to Chinatown Chicago). Although in a foreign country, we could unite and stand as a team. Now, is this a good thing? It maybe but if carried to extreme, it is bad. 1 example quickly come to my head is the recent tsunami-hit Indonesia. There were campaigns in online forums against sending aid to Acheh, reminding people of how minority Chinese were butchered during Asian Financial Crisis in 1998. Pictures with beheaded people and scene after massacre were posted serves a fresh reminder. Surprisngly, it is well responded. Such brotherhood is anologous to those brotherhood from the Muslim world where one's cause is another's cause as well. Similarly, for us Chinese who bear hatred towards our Japanese friend, do we know why we have grudges against them? or is it because our parents hate them.

Their act of rewritting their history, downplaying the crime they committed in the past is intolerable. But we too should not be too emotional. The bible put it nicely,

"In your anger, do not sin."

So, as we protest peacefully against the Japanese for whatever reason- visit to Yasukuni shrine, rewritting textbook, etc, let us not forget our recent fault. Malaysians, what about the May 13 incident? Are we going to follow the footstep of our Japanese friend but briefly touching it in history textbook? For if we do not learn from history, we are bound to repeat the same mistakes, sometime in the future.

*Reminder to myself, updates on Japanese history textbook, after visiting Japan.

Sino-Japanese Relationship 1

I read about my friend tomatoinc's blog. I am so tempted to write a 5-page respond in his comment but I chose not to. Simply because I am such a nice guy who wont terrorize other people's blog. Nah, actual reason is that I want to read more first, and looks like now there are more stories regarding the antagonized relationshipe between the two power house.

If you may, it boils all the way to the 1930s when Japanese invaded China and commited all the horrorible things. I am not going to repeat them here for you can look them up easily. I understand that those are in the past and should be dealt by those in the past. The new generation should carry on and try to reconcile. Yes, that's the peaceful spirit.

To the Japanese, I would want to ask, how long you want to rewrite your history? I was told of their attempt to cover up those crimes commited during World War II in textbook. Maybe I could tolerate to some extend where they justify why they need to conquer Asia, since US block their sources of mineral vital to their industry. Hence the famous attack on Pearl Harbour, which I think was stupid. I want to get hold of their textbook and see how much they adulterated the history before I made any inappropriate comments.

Besides, the frequent visit to Yasukuni shrine augments the status of the leaders during World War II, who are war crimes, nonetheless. Personally, they are the heroes of Japan imperialist but their crimes- the slavery, the comfort women, abuse towards civilians. Personal visit to Yasukuni shrine is alright but if Mr Koizumi left his signature as PM Koizumi, then it is an act that the governmnet endorse the conduct of those who died. It's a controversial issue, a few years back. The people has the right to see them as heroes but the government should not. The difference should be clarified here.

A proper apology is demanded from the Japanese. Japanese are tired of apologizing but the Chinese is also tired of asking for decades. If they could apologize to the South Koreans, why not the Chinese? Is it because there are too many of them? There is no amount of compensation would be enough for the atrocities they had commited but what in the Chinese mind requested is that they (the Japanese) would stand up and admit their fault in the past. There is no use justifying that their aid to China indirectly serves that purpose. An official apology is necessary.

How could Japan be seen credible if they would not admit their act in the past? Although they are also victims of atomic bomb and their recovery has taken a uphill path that does not grand them any right to rewrite history. At least not until they could set theirself straigth, they should not be granted the permanent seat in UN,- not that I agree with how the current 5 members are selected to begin with.

To conclude with a fast period, I would say that the Japanese need to deal with those issues properly or they would not get the support of 1/6 world population.

*Will be back for more.

Various Assholes

*Warning: 18 SG. Go bark elsewhere if you think you are easily offended with swear words, bitch!

I like to play chinese chess. So, I registered myself to sina.hk and begin playing. Generally, the atmosphere is good. It is user friendly- simple features and little options. It is good since you can just go into the room and just start playing. Short and sweet. But, since there is little options, it is also easy to be manipulated. There are just ass holes who could win by taking advantage of the bug in the system.

So, here are a few categories of such ass holes who win with dirty tricks:

Motherfuckers
The game has 120s/move, 60s/move, 30s/move and 20s/move. In some situations, although it says 20s/move, it is actually a 5s/move. Now that is bull. Even PC takes more than 5s to move a step. So, once you sit down and your opponent makes his move, it's your turn. If you dont move within 5s, you're considered lose. Most of the time, you will lost not because you are incompetent rather, it's because you move the wrong pieces, or placed at the wrong position, or simply ran out of time.

Sucker
In other situation they would invite you for a game. But for some explicit reason, if you ignore the invitation long enough, you would magically sucked into the battlefield. Think it this way, you are away from your PC and they made you play without you agreeing to it. So, clock ticks and if you dont move, you lose!

Bastard
Also, there are times where your connection suck so much that you have to forfeit a game and concede the game. Although you are having huge advantages you are still doomed. However, I sometimes suspect I was hacked since my roommate's connection is still good but mine suck big time. Damn it, how could it happened?

Wanker
A variation of suckers. They made you play in a 20s/move game instead of normally a 60s/move or 30s/move. So they can rip their wins faster. Trust me, those who are playing 20s/move are insane. You cant think enough to make a rational enough move.

Those mentioned are bad enough. However, the greatest of all is

Pussy wanking son of a bitching whore
Those monsters with small dick would first invite you to a game and magically suck you into the game. And since you are not in, you automatically lose a game after 5s. While laughing at your absense, they would wank themselves and come every 5s until they ran out of cum. Oh, there is no end to the number of games they would steal from you.

I am a freaking victim for such misuse of technology. I was at a ratio of 78 : 36 : 1 (win : lose : draw) and suddenly one day I realised that I lost 154 game!!! It was then that my roommate told me that he helped me quit a game, after 'losing' more than 100 games in a 5s/move game! He said he couldnt imagine what happen if he didnt come back soon enough. I cant either. Motherfucker of all bastards...

Really, if you wanna win, win it fair and square. Play a game where we put the rules on the board. I dont know what satisfaction you gain by winning via this lame tricks. I dont mind you screwing people with a lower win-lost ratio but his behaviour is simply unacceptable. I dont mind losing to a good player but I just cant stand such pussy wanking behaviour. I hope he will get butt-fucked one day or be castrated and his balls fed to dogs.

NCAA Finals

Warning: Long post ahead. Go bark elsewhere.

Screw bloggers. They have biased against Malaysian will all alphabets that appears on my name! I cant log in for the past 36 hours but I have no problems reading my friends blog. What the heck. Alright, here is the latest report on NCAA Finals between Fighting Illini and the Cardinals.

So, my school managed to get into the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Men's basketball championship Finals! wohuu!! We kicked everyone's butt but Ohio States to get into the NCAA championship, holding a No.1 record for 15 weeks, beaten all odds to be in the championship. That's a fairy tale journey. Nothing was more intense than the match against University of Arizona where we still trailed 13 points 5 minutes before the end of match. Yea, as you may have anticipated, we scored 1 more (61-60) in extratime to get into final four. But it wasnt all that comfortable for those watching the match. I wasnt watching it and dont poison me for that.

The moment we beat University of Louisville, the crowd went crazy! Thousands of people stormed the streets, ran amok and start to beat up the policeman. OK, that was exaggeration but there were thousands of people, assemnbled in Green Street (main street in campus with all the bars) parading the street; another group ran to the Alma Mater and start climbing it; another one stay and celebrated in the Quad. There was nothing but craziness! Imagine Malaysia winning World Cup! Yea, that's the atmosphere and it wasnt the finals yet!

Fighting Illini fans was chanting "March to the Arch" As a student of University of Illinois Urbana Champaign (UIUC), the least I could do is to watch a game at a better place than my floormate's room. I went to the Assembly Hall and watch the battle of the giants between UIUC and University of North Carolina (UNC) together with 12234 other Fighting Illini fans. The Hall capacity was 20000 and you can see a sea of orange T-shirts! Oh by the way, the ratio of UIUC to UNC fans in St Louis was 5:1- just amazing! We cheered everything Fighting Illini and jeered everything the Cardinals- the team, the coach, and the cheerleaders. The crowd's response was unison until Micheal Jordan appeared- he graduated from UNC.

Back to the crowd. We were jeering like mad men released from the institution when UIUC grabbed the ball after the whistle. However, the crowd was quite anxious after we went down 2-9. But as we made a come back at 10-10, the crowd was excited again. The first half was over with us down 15 points (27-12), the greatest margin at half time. As the name suggested, after some rest at half time, the fighting Illini came back fierce and aggresive. The crowd automatically stand up when the game started and took their seat during advertisement. People cheering I-L-L and I-N-I and shouting 'defense! (clap clap) defense! (clap clap)' when defending our zone. Fighting Illini managed to make a miraculous come back, levelled them at 6 minutes before ending. It's a miracle to me that our cheers could be heard miles away. We even lead 1 point at one time and manage to equalize 70-70 at 2 minutes before ending. But everyone was worried as James Augustine was sent away after 5 fouls. Commentator said that he was at the wrong place and the wrong time. I agree since he wasnt being rough but just a slight brush or touch here and there. Cant referee be blind for a moment if it is not serious.

So, here we were, 2 minutes before ending and forward, James Agustine, was out of the game. Our great epic story was threaten when UNC managed to score 2 pts, leading us with 72-70. Clock is running out but Fighting Illini still missed their shots which they are not suppose to. Worse still, we were fouled at our defense zone and they are making 2 throws. We jeered and make weird sounds, cursing that Sean May would not make his throw. I wont be surprised if someone has a vodoo doll with his name on it. Oh yea, he missed his first but not the second. Now UNC led with 73-70. Good enough, one 3 pointer and that would make it back. Is that possible? We passed the ball around at the enemy's zone, looking sereptiously for a nice chance to strike back. Time was against us but we were patient. Slowly, like a tiger crouching toward its prey, and Dee Brown took the ball, at the right time, no one was there guarding, and he shot! The ball went like a curve, heading toward the net, all so smooth and sweet until the hit on the ring brought us back to reality. So near yet so far.

But we still possessed the ball, looking for a right time to pass. There was a hole, and he passed it. Dee Brown, heading towards the ball but denied as Cardinals intercepted. We were back to our zone. They made their shot and the whistle sounded. We were fouled again and they were awarded 2 throws. They made it. 9 seconds left and we need to grab 5 points. We attempted but to no avail. It ended sadly with us down 70-75 to UNC.

Having said that, there was not excuse not to party. People crowded in the Quad, same people gathered and having some Brazillian samba festival celeberation. Crowd went crazy again- standing on Foellinger Auditorium railling, climbing trees, dancing crazily, firework shooting. We moved along from the Quad to the Alma Mater to Green Street. Someone even brought and showed off his pet- a tamed boa snake. I think there was less crowd but still it was great. This time, I went and joined the fun from 1030pm - 1230am. It wasnt really over yet when I left at 1230am.

It was a great experience. It reminds me of my high school year as a proud Victorian. Such was the atmosphere when we fought against our rivals- St Johns and MCKK. The jeers and cheers, they are so universal. It's the same here except it was by 10000+ people instead. Now, I am even more proud to be a UIUC student.

Yes, I am a convert of the orange cult.

Riddles part 2

As promised, this is the other half of the ancient scroll from the Shadow of Amn.

1. Nonetheless, the feedback varies from good to doesnt up to expectation and all others. Not to mention that it is viewed as quite controversial in Malaysia which I think is baseless. Dont tell me a statement in the movie "Every Malay is lazy" doomed that film as un-malaysian. But I really dont know why it is viewed as controversial.

This time while watching the movie, I did something funny. I opened my Word document and jolt notes! Yeah, I wish I have the same enthusiasm for lectures. So here are my thoughts. Warning, some spoiler maybe accidentally included.

1. In general, I LOVE that movie. I wish I could get hold of one of the DVDs if they ever have one. It's background gives it away the original Malaysian flavor. For example, its interior background of Orked and Jason's slum did not gave me an impression of overdecoration. It also captures the lifestyle of Malaysia- chinese dining together for dinner, the servant in a family, VCD stalls. It's simple and very real. Sepet is also very rich in languages, with usage of Cantonese, Hokkien, Malay and also English, although I am quite surprised Malaysian nowadays communicate in English. I was expecting some Malays somewhere- like the scene later where the gangfight occurs

2. Timeline. However I think the developement was too fast. Especially the early part. Although I know that it is love at first sight but I didnt expect them to just go out after the first attempt of Jason to woo her. Later I was captured by the movie and I forgot to comment about the timeline anymore.

3. Casting was funny. It overall gives me an impression that these people are a bunch of amatuers and guess what, for some I was right!! For some, I dont know. So, no comment. I like Orked's character and I think she played it pretty well, attempting to show her cuteness. I was especially captured by her voice in the phone conversation before gangfight and also the act of standing a giraffe stand on her face. Jason's however wasnt at all good. There is a tatoo written "This is my first film and I am nervous." But maybe his cuteness would make it up. However, Pak Tan and his wife is truly a strange couple. Watchout this strange couples in the movie and they are hilarious.

4. Other funny crappy stuff not to miss during the show.

-Ring tone from Jason and Ah Keong's friend. It's stupid.
-There is a vietnamese song in the movie, I suspect.
-Orked speaking Cantonese.
-Attempt of Jason buying flower is quite touching.
-I think it is funny when Jason's family quarrel in various language.
-The combing in series.
-The animation at the start, introducing cast and crew.
-Orked's family car.
-Jason's mum's Malay accent.
-Silent moment the first time they met.

5. In the end, Orked died in the gangfight.

In general, I think it is a very non-typical Malaysian movie. It brought up some thoughts of social issues once in a while which is worth thinking. It's just a simple love story, between a chinese boy and a malay girl. It gets complicated only with all uncomfortable within the society. It had been in the past, it would still be in the present, at least for now.

Watch the movie to find out the no 5. No Orked didnt die in gangfight.

I would conclude this entry with a quote at early of the movie:

"Tapi hairan eh. Orang bangsa lain, bahasa lain, tapi isi hati, kita boleh faham eh."

Self proclaimed site-critic 1

Hmm, was checking my comment (Response to events in Malaysia) and was surprised that someone actually dropped by and grace this isolated site of mine. Hey you, next time, at least take the time to lie!

Still, if any other soul happen to stumbled into my site, I would say that yea, go to this Recom.org website. The founders of the site are a bunch of potential leaders residing in US, and mostly from the renowned Cornell University (UIUC rules by the way). Just what I gathered after surveying the site, correct me if I am wrong. Hey, at least I browsed through some of your intro forum! They have a vision too- so aspiring that they appear only on a look-good-resume.

What is it? If you are a Malaysian, yes, you should spend your mindless hours in the forum. Good tips, good gossips, great stress-relief browsing through topic and reading subintellectual debates on various MALAYSIAN topics. Instead of lepaking at Leisure Mall or Lusty Arena, it is better to do it online. They are also sensitives people, catering to minority's need- if you are Linux geeks, Japanese anime freaks, entrepeneur-wanna-be, etc. It is a good place for online mamaking. Yea, browsing while sipping your favorite teh tarik or teh-o-bing.

For non-Malaysians, if you think you wanna check out some desi-chicks, nope this is NOT the place to go. This is more of a site, attempting to networking people Malaysian youth and share our ideas. Exchanges between the minds of international students and local (Malaysian) students are suppose to somehow contribute to the developement of our beloved country. So, please redirect your desi attention to elsewhere. I would suggest google.com to begin with.

So in conclusion, despite that bugger's shit dropping pollution, I came across a good site. Except I need mamak stuff instead of my chips and coke. Oh ya, 1 problem, it is still a US-dominated forum, so please spread words. Multi-polar power is always a better option.

Response to events in Malaysia

I was revisiting sites that I had not been for a while. Great catching up from Jeff's site regarding 2 worrying issue: 1. 'unofficial' interview of a blogger by police officer and 2. hoo haa of Malaysia Planning 9 (MP9). For more information I would recommend visiting the mentioned blog or any other sites.

My response would be as follow:

1. Interview by police officer to a blogger is a sign that blogsphere's influcence is taken seriously. I am not sure if they already have some hidden agenda or merely a warning towards fellow bloggers not to write something provoking. Blog, just like other technology, could benefit both ways. Blog has enormous potential to be a propaganda media, but we need to allocate more resources in the ICT field. Besides, we need to increase the online readership, rivaling to newspaper. These goes hand in hand- without demand, there is no point in investing; without investment, demand could not be created. It is cheesy but most bloggers would have noticed the influence of blog in the publicity of presidential election in US.

Having said that, Malaysian community would experience something different, simply because of ISA. In many cases, blogging topics maybe crossing boundaries, defined unsafe by ISA standard. (referring to non-personal articles) Internet allows unlimited access and fair play for every bloggers. No one could be out-written for each bloggers would have some readership and there are many free blogging sites available. So, as far as topics are concerned- infinite. Are Malaysians ready to handle the various provoking thoughts and ideas, crossing the boundries, deemed safe by ISA? With ignorance and naive mindsets, would blog be abused as a breeding ground for ultras- malay, chinese and indian alike?

I would like to see an ISA-friendly blogshpere. Without discussion and provoking thoughts, we could take status quo for granted, in line with many bloggers visions to create a more critical community. ISA would prevent the abuse of blog, assuming that is is not abused as political tool, like what it is seemed right now.

2. MCA proposing the increase of SJK schools was a heated topics in major newspaper. MCA maybe playing a race card here (note that I dont hear Indian's voice) but it is not without reasons. For years, the growth of SJK and SK is not proportional. There is a spur in creating SKs but proposal of SJKs were shot down tamely. The argument is that SK would promote the racial integrations and minglings among different race would promote harmony in the future. My question was that is that a mere excuse or it is a sincere thoughts? That is putting aside the actual funds received from MoE as well as average ratio of students per class in SK and SJK.

The main advantage in SJKs is really to be taught and learn in one's mother tongue. It is more comfortable to be soaked in an environment that is more familiar with. That fact cannot be ignored by the policy makers. PLO is totally a different atmosphere, which cannot substitute SJKs. If SK be made the mainstream primary school, can SK evokes the same atmosphere? Can the non-Muslim comminities be patient with the prayers? Would bumi headmaster be sensitives enough to the needs of non-bumies teachers and students?

Another trend I saw was that debates came mainly from MCA and UMNO. I believe MoE has every right and is the ultimate institution that should be heed. Why is it everytime that whenever an education policy is brought up, the UMNO and MCA must voice their opinion. No offense but why is DPM always be consulted? It is the executive insitution that is running the job and MoE is the appropriate minister that should be dealt with.

Taken for granted

How many times we take people for granted? I could take things for granted (meal plans...) most of the time but never take a person's offering for granted. Especially a personal one. Well, it may happens once in a while but that is very rare of me and I apologize if I didnt realize earlier. Normally I would have weighed somewhat before a decision is made.

Having said so, I have a story to share.

This person is not entirely bad in general but this event pisses me off a little. Maybe I should follow michaelooi's style of giving them nicknames. I shall call this one, Sprite. (yea, so happen there is a bottle of sprite in front of me)

Sprite and I usually work our homework at the very last minute, so it happened again yesterday night. I dont mind sprite copied my entire homework because I would have done the same on some other homeworks. The problem is that there is a graph and data that need to be printed and sprite doesnt have a printer. So, I volunteered to print if off from either my roomie's printer or the dorm printer (10c each). I went and print, since I have to print mine anyways. Class started but sprite didnt come yet. Sprite came in really late, surprisingly with the homework printed out already.

If you are capable of printing that stuff, why you asked me to print it? It is like putting me as a backup plan in case you cant print it in the morning? I may have brought it too far but I would have seen myself as someone who cant be trusted. Why accept my offer in the first place? So happen that I need to print my stuff this time, what if sometimes I just stayed up and print only your stuff and you happily came to class the next day with nicely printed data? Worst still if I am doing you a favor. I dont mind doing it but it seems that my effort wasnt appreciated.

If I learn anything from this event, it is that at least I know something more about sprite. It's a good thing I guess. But I do wonder if I shouldnt be that nice in the first place.

Riddles part 1

Was playing Baldur's Gate II- Shadow of Amns. Here are the riddles that I came across during the game as some quest. They gave some 9-10 choices but most of them I guessed it without looking at the options provided. Dont worry, there is always a quick-save button in case you got it wrong. Enjoy!

1. They come to witness the night without being called; a sailor's guide and a poet's tears. They are lost to sight each day without the hand of a thief.

2. The more that there is, the less that you see. Squit all you wish when surrounded by me.

3. The life I led is mere hours or less, I send all my time by being consumed. I am quickest when thin, slowest when fat, and wind is the bane of the gift that I bring.

4. The man who invented it, doesnt want it for himself. The man who bought it, doesnt need it for himself. The man who needs it, doesnt know it when he needs it.

5. A spirited jig it dance bright, banishing all but darkest night. Give it food and it will live; give it water and it will die.

6. Lighter then what I am made of, more of me is hidden than is seen, I am the bane of the mariner, a tooth within the sea. Speak my name.

7. I can have no color, thought there may be darkness within. I have no weight and hold nothing, and if placed in a container it becomes all the lighter.

8. Of all your possesion, I am the hardest to guard. If you have me, you will want to share me. If you share me, you will no longer have me.

9. Alive as you but without breath, as cold in my life as in my death; never a thirst though I always drink, dressed in a mail but never a clink.

10. They follow and lead, but only as your pass. Dress yourself in the darkest black and they are darker still. Always they flee the light though without the sun there would be none.

11. I am free for the taking through all your life, though given but once at birth. I am less than nothing in weight but will fell the strongest if you held.

12. I have holes throughout, from back to front and top to bottom to cover. More nothing than something within, and yet I still hold water.

Answer:
stars, darkness, candle, coffin, fire, ice, a hole, secret, fosh, shadow. breath, sponge.

"An answer that moves you forward, though only if you know where you began. Nothing better to do. I admit that the fire alarm in the dorms and apartments are plain dumb and stupid. It's high frequency sound emitted is also irritating. It can virtually drive you nuts. It's like err...talking to a smart guy about idiocy. Bad example, but you get what I meant.

So, what happened was that I went for my tutoring session in the other dorm as usual, sitting there for 2 hours and shake my legs and wait for my money to fall from sky. Yes, it is a dream job. Plus I get the bonus of listening to mushy mellow hunny bunny conversations. Yes, aparently some idiots decided to show their affections in the room and start kissing, sweet talking...Well, as long as no one is there, I dont give a shit. You can even go humping right in front of me and I'll just be my nerd self doing my homework. Technically I could just swipe my card (clock in) and went humping some people in the dorms and coming out 2 hours later to clock out. No freaking souls come.

However, that very faithful day, for some reason, my tummy decided to play a trick on me. Those crap in me suddenly went frenzy and demand immediate attention. I began sitting on that bowl and start shitting. Shitting half way, the bloody alarm went off. Cant be a better time. Knowing that most likely it will be a prank from someone who has nothing better to do, I kept shitting until I am satisfied. At the same time though, I was afraid too that what if it really is a fire? I would experience such unhonorific death- "Student cum tutor died frying while shitting". Man, what a headline I would make. Still, I shit until my tummy is not cramming and then only I get my ass off the bowl.

In the cold, I am waiting for those late firefighter to come and declare the martial to be over. Before they could do that though, my tummy again request my attention. So, I walked back to my dorm (5 mins away) and get into a bathroom and shit again. This time, I make sure those bastards are done with it and would strike no more.

Afterthat, I went back tutoring no one and sit there doing my homework while entertaining myself with conversation of people beating other people like what I usually do.

Man, I hate fire alarms. I hate it even more when I was shitting.

A boring post

First and foremost, let me introduce you to my Mass Transfer class Professor. Prof is a new guy, I believe. At least he doesnt look like a old man with white hairs mumblings his good old days studying the subjects. Well, these professors should be forcefully retired and play with their grandkids at home. Off tangent a little, back to my prof.

My prof has horrible handwriting. I wonder if part of his brain is functiong alright as he loves to jumble up all small and capital letters when he was writing on the board. Doctor's handwriting is unfanthomable but his is a pain to the eyes. On top of that, he loves spaces. That means he takes up quite some spaces to scribble something little. That is good. It saves me from squeezing my eyes trying to see what is written on the board. However, that comes together with his speed. He is always afraid that he may just die on the spot anytime that he would teach his stuff real fast. Not to mention he failed his high school math. Even he admitted that his calculation is full of errors.

So, what happened today was that he was amending a claim he made last week. He claimed that one of the equation in the book has error and we should not use it. But today, he went through some long never ending derivations to show us that he was wrong. Good. But his proofing calculation is again as usual, full of errors here and there. So, students begin to question his calculations, but he was supported by TA. What actually happened was that he skipped one step and put the equal sign at the wrong place.

Hmm...I read this post again but I dont find it interesting. But well, one boring post should be enough to tell you that I am alive, without life.

Happy Valentine Day

This is from Baldur's Gate, Shadow of Amns. Yes, your arms.

(Sir Cadril: snort, chuckle)

Lady Irlana: Did you know, good sir? And what makes your think you are worthy to spend an evening in my arms?

Garrid: Well...it's easy...I, uh...

(Cyrando: I can never truly be worthy of the lady of virtue, my love...I only desire that you see past my faults and give me a chance!)

Garrid: I can never...truly be worthy of...blue lady of virtue,...my love...I only desire you...that you see past a faults and give...me pants!

(Why not tell her how handsome and sturdy I am, Cyrando?)

(Oh, get over yourself, boy!)

Lady Irlana: Give you pants, good sir? And you, per chance missing a pair?

Sir Cadril: Well perhaps the gnome fellow standing below over good Garrick has the answer to that. What say you, sir gnome?

Cyrando: Eek! discovered! I never enjoy such luxury of not waking up until 100pm for a class since... I NEVER have such luxuries, now that I come to think about it. It was a wonderful week, no assignment due, catching up with friends, no reading assignments, no police fines, chics wearing mini skirt and showing off their butt skin, etc etc etc. I cocked the last one but you get the idea. Those moments of no worries and you feel so ready to die.

This week however was a total contrast. Maybe it is due to the freaking snow storm curse that fall upon us last weekend. So, I have 3 sets of homeworks due tomorrow, one which I have no freaking clue how to start after playing with it for hours. As for my language class, we have homework due everyday. On Tuesday, I handed in my assigment at the end of the class, so I am considered late; Wednesday, I had done my homework, but the wrong one; Thursday, I couldnt find my CD so I cant finish the other half of my homework. What other complaints? Gotta borrow $1 from my friend to get a Mac-Chicken because I am broke. Went for TA's office hours, preparing myself to lick his boots for answers, but not a single soul was there. Meals? No, I have not been eating properly, dont even mention regularly.

So, I tried to put in effort but wasnt really rewarded properly. Fine. The whole cosmos has turned against me. [While touching wood] better tomorrow no power in this cosmos would screw up my lunch appointment.

Potluck

About to go for Raya Haji Potluck Dinner. It is a potluck lunch so I am supposed to bring things. But what could a dorm staying lazy student brings but his butt and belly? Oh...I accidentally shopped a cheapskate huge ass bottle of 7-Up. That should do the job.

Alright, that is not the point. The issue is that should you attend a pot luck party if you are not bringing anything? Logically, you shouldnt; pratically you should. It depends on the events. Some events people cook so much so that you need to bring extra bellies to finish up the food. [Think of those tsunami victim who has nothing to eat for days hanging on the tree!!] The idea is that if enough people bring more than enough food, you should attend. Is there any formulas to forcast if there is anough food to fill up every asshole's tummy? Sure there is.

Law 1: Host will contribute half of the food.

As a host, you wont want to disappoint your guest, so you would somehow try to prepare more food, taking into account that some asshole like me would come empty-handed but go home loaded. So there you go cooking in the kitchen for ages instead of watching TVs and gossiping on the phone. Also important is that the host would have contacts and obtain enough confirmation before hand. Therefore, there will be tonnes of food on the table. At least, until now, all the pot luck parties that I'd gone to have enough food to entertain everyone.

Law 2: Not everyone is an asshole

Assholes like me are always the minority. Most people would contribute at least the minimum amount. At least when asked, you could modestly mentioned that you are no good cook but pretend to be surprised that your food was finished clean. So, as long as the minorities remain as the minorities, there will always be lots of food. What usually happens, as a matter of fact, is that people tend to bring drinks. So there will always be excess of drinks and chips. And guess what? you could bring them back!! So, avoid being a total jerk by bringing chips and drinks. At least there is a chance that you could bring it home.

Law 3: Plenty of food does not guarantee good food

If you have nothing to lose, go ahead and come and chew all the good food on the table. If you are a little guilty [which you shouldnt], you could choose to come later, giving cock excuses to be late (ie period, mentally unstable...) in that case, the party started and people wont question you about your food. Besides, coming late with food defeats the purpose. Or if you are really shy, come and not eat at all, so that you are still adhere to the potluck principle and the spirit of potluck. And may your potluck god bless you tremendously for being so potluck-fearing. Nonetheless, coming late does not guarantee you good food.

So, whatever crap that I'd mention, you may not see the relevence. The point I am trying hard to drill into your stubborn head is that GO! Dont be worried about not contributing food. [We shall take revenge some other ways] The idea is to meet up with fellow friends and assholes. To check out pretty girls and new freshies. To be kiasu and check out how many subjects your coursemate had flunk. To get the lastest gossip on who is getting married, how many kids they have...blah blah blah

Asshole or not, you should attend potluck. At least when you are invited, you are loved by someone, eventhough we know that you are a total jerk.

Can you do it?

Was flipping through random stuff but cant help recalling what I read in the newspaper while I was in London. Pledges made my various governments about the aid they would provide.

I talked to a person from UK while I am in Liverpool, he actually said that maybe we should thank god the tsunami hit during the festive season- people answered the call as quickly as the tsunami hits. It's quite sentimental that such things happens during Christmas; when you are sitting warmly by the fire and the news flashing people in another part of the earth suffering, you more or less should be touched. [else, go eat grass] He doubted if it happens during other time of the year, the response would as overwhelmed. Well, you do have cash to spend on gifts and presents during Christmas, right? In addition to that, I think that the number of foreigner trapped and lost during the hit also helps adding to the amount of money raised by the public. You connect better if someone in your country is involved.

Another interesting events happened was that government pledged an X amount of money only to be commented that it is too little compared. To 'save face', the best answer would be of course to raise the bar. We need more of such race. UN General Secretary Kofi Annan commented on that too, that the aid was not enough to cover the damage done. So, suddenly, US and UK tsunami aid index rose, like stock market in the 1990s. I hope the bubble wont burst like e-company stock.

The following list are [ugly] stuffs that people did-

1. Malaysia: donation turned spring cleaning. Unwanted stuff including thrashing clothings and some plate award...

2. Elsewhere: child kidnapped. Believed to be by local syndicate or simply attempt of people to adopt them.

3. UK: hoax stories about death. Soaring number of foreigners maybe 1 or 2 people less. This guy should be shot death and let his story be true.

4. Middle east: the are claims that tsunami was a god-sent phenomena due to people's sinful nature. What a claim of the century.

5. Indonesia: opportunity seen for the Indonesian Army (TNI) to crack down Acheh seperatist. What else would be a better time. Nonetheless, it is a great timing for foreigner to come in after the martial law.

6. Chinese community: 1997 Indonesia racial conflict was brought up again as an issue. It is hoped to stop aid sent specifically to Acheh. [Sad but true, this is the latest item when i read my offline yahoo! message.]

Nonetheless, things remain hopeful. Let's hope the pledged $2b would come as promised. Recall Earthquake in Bam, Iran, full amount was yet to be delivered.

Break Day

Got back from London yesterday. I was a little tired both physically and financially- missed the last coach service and gotta take a cab which is 8.6 times more expensive. Nonetheless I got back to Mikael's place safely.

What I have done in London? Lots of seeing and walking. My eyes have their fullest pleasure to enjoy the scenery of London. It's like walking in time, I cant help guessing how old a building is. I am amazed too at the great design of the landmarks- the Museum, St Paul Cathedral, Big Ben... not only it is huge but also rich in decoration and design. It's a shame that such beauty could only be engraved by my crude manual minolta camera. But the night is dead. Once after 9-10pm, streets are getting emptied as shops are closing. Nonetheless, I would try my very best to blog in details my thoughts about each and every place that I went in London...when I am bored. So, expect a long adventure periodically. By the way, this is the only time I didnt check out the british chic during my sightseeing.

So, where am I? I am back in Manchester. Finally a moment of laziness where I deliberately wake up at 11am. I need some disruption. I have been waking up latest 830am while I am in London. Twice at 730am. Only once at 930am when Id decided to skip church initially...opps...

So...my blogging resolution:
1. Tower of London and the Yeoman;
2. Da Vinci's Draft and his Madonna of the Rocks;
3. British Museum;
4. Stonehenge, Bath and Windsor;
5. Cambridge;
6. An Irish Bar in Kensington;
7. And Some Other stuff

So, that's my blog resolution. Should have ample of time until 31 December 2005.

Official Celeberation

Finally decided to switch to blogspot. When tblog denied me a couple of times, it meant the end of it.

So here am I reporting live from Liverpool, UK. We just got back from Mood, a nightclub in Liverpool and had my oversea countdown there. Nothing too great, but it is sure a different atmosphere compared to US nightclubs. Greatest difference- dont expect hot asian or latino chics to be there. They are all caucasians. Oh ya, I got hit for the first time, that includes 1 blonde chic taller than me, a black haired chic and a bearded gay fella...what a way to usher my new year. I think I cant differentiate a gay fella until he said, "hey, you look pretty." Grossest sentence I ever heard. Not even sure how to respond to that. Cant you sense that I am not interested in you at all, get lost! I think I could feel how a girl felt if she is bugged by someone she's not interested. No holding hands after that introduction shake, please!

Out of the club when we were leaving, many desperate people, guys and girls and gays and lesbians were making their last effort. I wish them all the best. Screwing some unknown monster. Dont forgot to put on your condom, suckers! I also saw some worthless matchas trying to force their way into exiting girls. Attempt to block their ways...Such ungentleman's move. Better go home and sleep. Try harder and be direct.

OK, enough of clubbing reports. Now from all over the Asian world. We have tsunami's death toll getting higher each day. Worst earthquake ever reported for 40 years. At least I did my share of putting 5 pound into a red cross's box before I go clubbing. I hope the living ones would be given strength to endure this trial. I also pray for the aftermath, that no epidemic would breakout. Nonetheless, relieve pledged from all over the world proves that the world is wonderful. It's amazing to see not only the amount, but the immediate response from other countries. And also the prayers offered...at least they have one in Liverpool. Maybe it is time for peace talk for India and Pakistan.

Recap of what happened in the world:

1. US whacking Iraq hardcore. Still occupying Iraq and attempt to wipe out insurgents. Greatest catch of the year- Saddam Hussein, in a rabbit hole.

2. Olympic in Athen, Greece went on well. Showdown of Ian Thorpedo and Micheal Phelp... as well as some other events. Malaysia haul nothing from that event.

3. 300+ death of school kids.
